Star Wars - Darth Nihilus

Darth Nihilus from one of, if not my all-time favorite, video game series. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Seriously, if you're an RPG fan who likes games like Zelda and Fire Emblem, and haven't played Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR), you're really, really, really, really, missing out. I wholeheartedly shoot down the motion that you need to be a Star Wars fan to like this game. No way is that true. Let me talk about this deviation, though, before I try and save the people who haven't played it. :)

Darth Nihilus, though this may come as a shocker, isn't necessarily the antagonist of KotOR II: The Sith Lords. I guess he's a secondary antagonist, out of the three or four in the game. What I love about KotOR, is how dark it is in contrast to the six movies. Seriously, Darth Nihilus, as you can see, is both an intimidating character... ...but just listen to his voice... That voice... was always nightmare fuel to me as a child! Of course, they couldn't have given such an intimidating figure a regular villainous deep voice, they had to give him this very creepy shambled language that leaves you staring aimlessly at your screen--as if you've just been hypnotized.

Nihilus is more of a creature who feeds on the Force. If I had to compare him to anyone (my +watchers know), it'd probably be Black Shadow from F-Zero: Seppuku. He's vague, dark, cruel, and has very mysterious and cloudy ambitions. In fact, at one point in the game, he practically pulls off exactly what Black Shadow does in the Endgame chapters with a planet called "Telos". The biggest question, obviously, everyone has about this character... is who's behind the mask. Answer: A mystery. There is no way of revealing what's behind his mask, even the action figure of Darth Nihilus literally trolled us all. I was so excited back when I received a Darth Nihilus action figure, because I knew that the hood was removable. But alas, all we were permitted to see what that he has black hair--nothing more. I, and many others, can only wonder many years later who's behind that mask. Now that the capitalist empire that is Disney owns Star Wars, we will never know... well, they'll probably ruin the mystery with their idea of what he looks like; I refuse to accept Disney's Star Wars as canon. They didn't create Nihilus, they have no say in the matter.

Now, onto KotOR itself. As I said, this is an RPG (single-player only, unfortunately) taking place 3900 years before the actual Star Wars movies. So, no Darth Vader or anyone of that sort. This is primarily why I believe you don't need to be a Star Wars fan to play this, because you're playing in a universe having absolutely nothing to do with stormtroopers, clones, and rebels. In KotOR (the first game), you create your character (male or female), what class you are, (smuggler, scout, brawler), and make a lot of decisions in the game. You control your destiny completely. There are times where you may see an old man getting mugged, and you are granted options: You can help him, which will grant you "Light Side Points", or laugh at him to gain "Dark Side Points". The more good you do, the more of a hero you become, while the more bad you do, the more evil you become. This plays a major role in what powers you're permitted to use and how effective they are.

Ideally, you want to become a Jedi or Sith as soon as possible, though, this isn't mandatory. By no means do you have to use a lightsaber and wear robes. By all means, you can skip that and just stick with rifles/pistols and armor. Like with all RPGs, you gain experience for killing and completing quests, which goes toward your level progression. As you level up, you can unlock new skills, powers, and feats (Dual-wield, new attack moves, etc.) which will help you in combat. Along your journey, you meet characters who will tag along with you. In the beginning, you get Carth Onasi (The GREATEST example of Earl Bendek you'll ever find in a game). You can interact with all these characters and learn more about them, and of course, each character does come with granted benefits. Some can create medkits for you, others can wield lightsabers, and some, like Carth, give you very helpful advice.

The only problem I have with this game is it's horrific saving feature. It does autosave, however, not too often, so yes, it's one of THOSE games. You must save often, and never in the middle of a predicament. If you have 1 hp left and surrounded by enemies, then save your game--you probably just ruined your game, because you'll be forced to keep reloading from that same situation. This is also why making backup saves is a good idea.

That's my only complaint, though. I would go as far as saying that this is the best RPG ever made, I mean, I love games like Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Zelda, etc. But THIS game, is incredible, and there's so many paths to take. Once you beat the game as a hero, you're tempted to start over as a villain. In the first game, there's two possible endings, depending on whether you're a hero or not. But don't even get me started on KotOR II... oh my lord... that game has SO many different endings depending on various conditions.

I know we're in the age of Xbox One, but if you can find Knights of the Old Republic for Xbox, and own a Xbox 360. Buy it. I don't care if you're not a Star Wars fan, just do it and trust my judgement. It's also available on PC for $10, you can buy it on Steam. Same for KotOR II, $10 on Steam. For Xbox, you can buy Knights of the Old Republic on Xbox for about $7. All in all, you're looking at about $10 for a game with MUCH replayability. You can't possibly argue  with me that $10 isn't worth it. Seriously, both games are so much fun and will leave you excited to keep progressing further. And trust me, if you're not a Star Wars fan now, this game will leave you one if you give it a chance.

This is quite possibly the biggest, most stressed, video game recommendation I could possibly give to my +watchers. It may have been about 10 years since this game was released, but trust me, it's timeless.

I have KOTOR 2.
Not KOTOR 1, but KOTOR 2, definitely.

Both games are awesome.

I beat it, too- for an unfinished game, it still works pretty well.
